Sweet potato modakam, Ganesh Chaturthi recipes

Sweet potato modakam, Ganesh Chaturthi 2017 is coming up on august 25. I have posted many varieties of modak recipes including our traditional Modakam with thengai poornam. Last year itself i wanted to post this Sweet potato modakam but couldn't post as i had posted other kozhukattai varieties. It turned out so well and we all loved the taste of sweet potato in modakam. If you want to make a different variety of modakam try out this one and also my jackfruit modakam too.
Check out my full collection of Ganesh Chaturthi recipes

     Nutmeg  a pinch (optional)
     Sesame oil  1-2 tsp
For the outer covering of modak
Idiyappam flour | Home made rice flour  3/4 cup
     Sesame oil   2 drops
     Water  as needed

Method:
  • In a wide bowl add the idiyappam flour.
  • Bring water to rolling boil. Add 2 drops of sesame oil to this.
  • Add this water to the flour little by little.

  • Mix well with a spoon.
  • When it is warm enough to handle grease your hand with oil and knead the dough into a smooth soft dough without any cracks.

  • For making the filling with sweet potato, boil the sweet potato and take out the skin. Actually i had one small sweet potato and that too was not good in one end. I noticed it after i peeled the skin.

  • Mix this well with a spoon.
  • Filling is ready. Make it into medium sized balls.
  • Take the dough and make it into lemon sized balls.
  • Grease your hands with sesame oil and using your fingers start making small cups.
  • Place one ball of the sweet potato stuffing.
  • Cover it and make it into a modak shape.
  • Check out my Video on how to make Modak.
  • Do it for the rest of the dough and stuffing.

Sweet potato kozhukattai
Notes:
  1. You can replace sweet potato with yellow pumpkin too.
  2. Ensure that the cooked sweet potato does not have any water, before making the poornam.
  3. Instead of sugar you can use powdered jaggery too.
  4. Adjust the sweetness according the sweetness of the sweet potato.
  5. Always keep the modakams covered to avoid drying.
