  • Salt as needed
  • Water to cook
  • 2 tsp coconut oil
  • ½ tsp mustard seeds
  • Few curry leaves
  • A pinch of asafoetida

To grind

  • 2 green chilis
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 3 tbsp coconut

Instructions

  • Chop the chow into medium sized cubes.
  • Add the chana dal to this and add ¾ cup of water to this.
  • Pressure cook for 4-5 whistles.
  • Grind coconut, green chili and cumin seeds into a fine paste.
  • In a pan add the coconut oil and add mustard seeds and curry leaves.
  • Once the mustard splutters add the cooked chow chow dal mixture.
  • Add the ground coconut paste to this.
  • Add salt and mix well.
  • Let this boil for 2 minutes.
  • If you feel it is watery, you can mix 2 tsp of rice flour with 2 tbsp of water without any lumps.
  • Chow chow kootu is ready.

Notes

1. The same kootu can be made using white pumpkin too.
2. We usually don’t add turmeric powder to this kootu.
3. Chow chow kootu pairs well with any spicy tamarind gravy.
