Drumstick kootu recipe

Simple no onion no garlic Murungakkai kootu recipe

Ingredients

  • ½ cup yellow moong dal un cooked
  • 2-3 drumsticks Murungakkai
  • 1 and ¼ tsp sambar powder
  • ½ tsp turmeric powder
  • Salt as needed
  • Water as needed
  • 2 pinches asafoetida
  • 2 tsp coconut oil
  • Few curry leaves
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds

To grind

  • ¼ cup coconut
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds

Instructions

  • Wash and pressure cook ½ cup of moong dal with 1.5 cups of water along with ¼ tsp of turmeric powder, for 3-4 whistles.
  • Chop the drumstick 3-4 cm long.
  • In a pan add the chopped drumstick and 1and ¼ tsp sambar powder, asafoetida, ¼ tsp turmeric powder and little salt.
  • Let this boil and cook till the drumsitcks gets cooked well. Let this not loose it shape. Do not pressure cook as it will tend to get over cooked.
  • Now add the cooked dal to this.
  • Grind ¼ cup of coconut and 1 tsp cumin seeds into a fine paste.
  • Add this to the pan.
  • Mix well and add salt. Add little water to adjust the consistency, if needed.
  • Mix this well and let this boil for 3-4 minutes.
  • Switch off the pan.
  • Add 2 tsp of coconut oil in a pan and add the mustard seeds and curry leaves.
  • Once the mustard seeds splutter, transfer this to the kootu.
  • Yummy drumstick kootu is ready.
  • Serve with hot rice or millet.

Notes

Notes:
1. You can replace murungakkai | drumstick with any other vegetable like, chow chow, mixed veggies, white pumpkin, avarakkai | broad beans too.
2. You can pair this with hot rice and a simple appalam too.
3. I used homemade sambar podi for making this drumstick kootu | Murungakkai kootu.
