In a mortar and pestle put a small piece of ginger, 2 cardamom, 2 cloves, a small cinnamon piece and 1/8 th tsp of fennel seeds.
Crush it coarsely. This will bring out all the flavours of the spices and make the masala chai flavourful.
In a saucepan, add 1.5 cups of water. You can reduce the water if you want a thicker tea.
Add the crushed spices.
Add 1.5 tsp tea powder. I used red label tea powder, you can use any thing of your choice.
Let this boil for 2-3 minutes.
Add ½ cup of milk to this.
Add sugar as desired. Stir it well.
Let this boil for a minute.
Do not boil more after adding sugar, it will spoil the taste.
Strain the mixture.
Serve hot.
Masala chai is ready.
