Vazhakkai podimas recipe

Raw banana podimas with freshly ground spices

Ingredients

  • 2 Raw banana
  • 3 tsp oil coconut oil
  • ½ tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp urad dal
  • Salt as needed

To roast and grind

  • 2 Toor dal
  • 2 Red chili
  • 2 pinches Asafoetida
  • 2 tbsp Coconut

Instructions

  • In a kadai, add 1/2 tsp of oil and roast the toor dal and red chilli till golden brown.
  • Allow it to cool. Grind this into a fine powder along with the coconut.
  • Heat a kadai, add 1tsp of oil, and temper with mustard seeds, urad dhal, and asafetida.
  • Now add the grated vaalakai, the ground powder, and mix well.
  • Cut the raw banana in half and boil it in water for 10-12 minutes, or until cooked.
  • Don't not over cook and this will make a mashed podimas.
  • Take it out when 3/4th is done and remove the skin.
  • Grate the raw bananas.
  • Heat a kadai, add 1tsp of oil, and temper with mustard seeds, urad dhal, curry leaves, and asafoetida.
  • Now add the grated raw banana, the ground powder, and mix well.
  • Transfer it to a serving bowl. You can mix this with hot rice and papad.
  • Will taste excellent with vathakulambu rice also.
  • Enjoy any combo of your choice.

Notes

1. You can make the podi and use it whenever you want. It can be stored for a month.
2. The podi can be used for sundal also.
3. Vazhakkai podimas pairs well with any South Indian meal.
