Vazhakkai podimas recipe | raw banana podimas, recipe with full video and step-by-step pictures.
Vazhakkai podimas is made by first cooking the raw banana, then cooking it with minimal spices. Unlike the vazhakkai roast, this doesn’t involve much time and oil.
I recently learnt from my mom is different from the usual podimas we make. My mom learnt this from my athai. So thanks to my athai.We all enjoyed it, and here is the recipe for Vazhakkai podimas. Check out my potato podimas and vazhaikkai chips recipe.
Vazhakkai podimas recipe
Raw banana podimas with freshly ground spices
Servings 3
Ingredients
- 2 Raw banana
- 3 tsp oil coconut oil
- ½ tsp mustard seeds
- 1 tsp urad dal
- Salt as needed
To roast and grind
- 2 Toor dal
- 2 Red chili
- 2 pinches Asafoetida
- 2 tbsp Coconut
Instructions
- In a kadai, add 1/2 tsp of oil and roast the toor dal and red chilli till golden brown.
- Allow it to cool. Grind this into a fine powder along with the coconut.
- Heat a kadai, add 1tsp of oil, and temper with mustard seeds, urad dhal, and asafetida.
- Now add the grated vaalakai, the ground powder, and mix well.
- Cut the raw banana in half and boil it in water for 10-12 minutes, or until cooked.
- Don't not over cook and this will make a mashed podimas.
- Take it out when 3/4th is done and remove the skin.
- Grate the raw bananas.
- Heat a kadai, add 1tsp of oil, and temper with mustard seeds, urad dhal, curry leaves, and asafoetida.
- Now add the grated raw banana, the ground powder, and mix well.
- Transfer it to a serving bowl. You can mix this with hot rice and papad.
- Will taste excellent with vathakulambu rice also.
- Enjoy any combo of your choice.

Notes
1. You can make the podi and use it whenever you want. It can be stored for a month.
2. The podi can be used for sundal also.
3. Vazhakkai podimas pairs well with any South Indian meal.

Hi good recipe!Did not know that we could add thur dhal to it.Will try it out.
vazhakka thoran is one of my fav's.. have tried it with Red beans , but never with dal..

I love vazhakkai podimas but this is different.. My mom's version has onions, ginger & g. chillies with coconut. Must try this toor dhal red chillies version.
