Thattu vadai set | thattai sandwich is a popular snack in Salem, a small townĀ big city in Tamilnadu. My sister introduced me Ā this thattu vadai set as after her marriage she was staying in Salem for 8 years. My brother in law , is now in salem on an official transfer. My sister was insisting me to post this thattu vadai recipe here for a long time. I am bit lazy to make thattai and post this recipe. Last week when my mom came here she sent a packet of Salem thattai and finally i made it at home. I loved it very much and my kids too loved this. Instead of giving them the thattai for snack, for a change we can give this one as it has carrot and beetroot. If you have the chutneys and thattai ready you can make this snack quickly. Thattu vadai set

Ā  Ā  Ā  Beetroot Ā grated Ā  Ā  Ā  1/4 cup
Ā  Ā  Ā  Carrot Ā  Ā grated Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā 1/4 cup
Ā  Ā  Ā  Onion Ā  Ā  Ā  1
Ā  Ā  Ā  Coriander leaves Ā  Ā  Ā few
Ā  Ā  Ā  Salt Ā  Ā  Ā  as needed
Ā  Ā  Ā  Oil Ā  Ā  1 tsp
For Green chutney
Ā  Ā  Ā Coriander leaves Ā  Ā  1/4 cup
Ā  Ā  Ā Mint leaves Ā  Ā  1/4 cup
Ā  Ā  Ā Sugar Ā  Ā  a pinch
Ā  Ā  Ā Green chili Ā  Ā half
Ā  Ā  Ā Salt Ā  Ā  as needed
Ā  Ā  Ā Lemon juice Ā  Ā few drops
For Red Chutney
Ā  Ā  Onion Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā 1
Ā  Ā  Tomato Ā  Ā  Ā 1
Ā  Ā  Ā Red chili Ā  Ā 1
Ā  Ā  Ā Garlic Ā  Ā  Ā 1
Ā  Ā  Ā Tamarind Ā  Ā very little pieceĀ 
Ā  Ā  Ā Salt Ā  as needed

Method:

  • In a pan add oil and add the mint leaves, coriander leaves and green chili.
  • Saute for a minute and switch off the flame.
  • Grind this along with sugar, salt and lemon juice.
  • Green chutney is ready.

Green-chutney

  • In the same pan add the roughly chopped onion and tomato . Add the red chili, garlic and tamarind also to this and saute them for 3-4 minutes in a medium flame.
  • Allow this to cool completely and grind this into a fine paste. Add salt while grinding.

  • In a plate mix the grated beetroot, carrot and sliced onions together. Add salt and chopped coriander leaves. Mix well.
  • In a plate keep 2 thattai and spread a layer of green chutney to that.
  • Sprinkle a generous mixture of beetroot carrot on the top of this.

  • In another thattai spread the red chutney and close this on the top like a sandwich.

  • Thattu vadai is ready . Enjoy this with hot tea or coffee. As it is so hot now a days, i had with cold sprite .

Notes:
  1. Always serve this immediately, Ā Else will be soggy.
  2. You can add make the chutneys more spicy too.
  3. For a change you can make this thattu vadai with the green chutney and red chutney which we use for chaat and sprinkle with some sev in the last.
