Chakka unniappam with video
Chakka unniyappam or jackfruit neiappam, is generally made using chakka varati.  We make unniappam | nei appam for aavani avittam, Gokulashtami and Karthigai deepam. After making jackfruit modagam, i wanted to try jackfruit poli and ela adai this year. Ela adai , few days back my friend’s mom taught me while she was making it. But today due to some urgent work, i didn’t have time to make poli or ela adai.  During our India trip in June, we attended a wedding in Kerala and came to know that they make nei appam with jackfruit. So i thought i will give it a try. It tasted so awesome, if you are a jackfruit lover then you will love it for sure. The nei appams were crispy outside and soft inside. Check out my

Video of how to make Jackfruit unniappam

Method:

  • Cut the jack fruit and put them into a mixer jar. Add grated coconut, jaggery and cardamom powder to this.
  • Grind this into a smooth paste.
  • In a wide bowl add the rice flour. You can use home made rice flour or store bought flour or idiyappam flour too.
  • Roast the coconut bits in ghee and add to this. (if adding)
  • Add the baking soda (if adding) and salt.
  • Add the ground jackfruit puree to this.
  • Mix well. Add little water to bring it to a right consistency. It should not be too thick or too thin.
  • If you are going to deep fry in oil, then keep the batter thick.
  • I used the paniayaram pan for this.
  • Add few drops of ghee to the pan.
  • Scoop in the batter to this.
  • Keep the flame medium low.
  • Cover it with a lid.
  • Once when it is cooked on one side, flip on to the other side.
  • If you want add few more drops of ghee.
  • Cover and cook for few minutes. Ensure not to get it burnt. Keep the flame medium and maintain the temperature throughout.
  • Take it out from the pan. Serve hot.
  • Repeat this for the rest of the batter.
Notes:
  1. You can make chakkavarati and add this to the flour and make unniappam.
  2. Rice flour can be replaced by maida and deep fried.
  3. Instead of adding rice flour, you can soak raw rice for 2 hours and grind into a thick batter and continue with the remaining process.
