Thakkali sadam, Tomato rice a simple bachelor friendly | lunch box recipe. Recipe with full video and step by step pictures.
Thakkali sadam, Tomato rice is a Popular South Indian variety rice. I have fond memories of taking tomato rice for lunch during my school and college days. Since amma was a working mom, we would mostly take dosai with molagapodi for lunch. Happily, we would take it as we are a huge fan of dosai molagapodi. Whenever amma gets an off day on a school working day, we would get varieties of food for the lunch box. We would look forward to chapati kurma, thakkali sadam, carrot rice, and brinjal rice in those days.
I have posted Thakkali biryani | tomato biryani recipe in Jeyashri’s kitchen. We have lots of tomato-based South Indian recipes like tomato thokku, tomato pickle, Tomato sweet pachadi.

- 2 Tomato
- 1 Onion
- 2 Green chilli
- 1 tbsp Oil
- 1 tsp Ghee
- 1 tsp Red chili powder
- Salt as needed
- 1.5 cups Cooked rice
- ½ tsp Turmeric powder
- 1 tsp Garam masala
- ½ tsp Mustard seeds
- 2 green chilli
- Curry leaves few
Instructions
- In a pan add 1 tbsp oil and once it becomes hot add ½ tsp mustard seeds, curry leaves, and 2 slit green chili.
- Green chili gives a nice taste to the Thakkali sadam, so do not omit.
- Once the mustard splutters, add 1 thinly sliced onions and saute till translucent.
- Add 2 chopped tomatoes. Always for tomato rice, the tomato should be more than the onion.
- Mix well and add 1 tsp red chili powder, salt, turmeric powder, and garam masala.
- I wanted to make it bit spicy so added 1 tsp red chili powder. You can reduce it if you want it less spicy.
- Mix well.
- Let this cook till tomatoes are mushy. Do not add any water. The water oozing out from the tomato is enough to get it cooked. Cook in a medium flame.
- Once this comes to a thokku consistency add the cooked rice.
- Mix well gently and evenly.
- Drizzle 1 tsp of ghee. This step is optional but highly recommended. Mix evenly
- Thakkali sadam | tomato rice is ready. You can garnish with coriander leaves if you want.
